How does the folding wing work?

The bolt drops into the ceramic hole folded. As you turn the top screw, the metal wing swivels outward and pulls tight against the underside of the rim to lock it.

Do I need to reach under the bowl?

No. Drop the bolt in from the top and tighten the screw – no washers or nuts to hold underneath.
